Sabine Dehnel inszeniert mit Augenzwinkern eine sinnliche wie intelligente Sujetkombination zum Erforschen des individuellen und kollektiven Bildgedächtnisses und ebnet mit ihrer Ahnengalerie „Mona“ den Weg für eine souveräne, selbstbewusste Weiblichkeit in das 21. Jahrhundert.  Bei alledem ist noch die Frage nach den Trägerinnen der Amulette offen. Wer ist die Porträtierte, ein gesichtsloses Dekolleté oder ein zitiertes Foto? Die Historie der Porträtmalerei und Porträtfotografie, die auch immer eine der Inszenierung ist, wird hier ganz nebenbei hinterfragt. Die Details und Verweise, mit denen Sabine Dehnel die Dekolletés bewusst inszeniert, evozieren einen bestimmten Frauentyp beim Betrachter. Auch wenn die Neugier auf das Gesicht unerfüllt bleibt, spinnen wir den durch die Künstlerin initiierten Bilddiskurs weiter, denken mit den eigenen Bildern die Bilder zu Ende. Die Erinnerungen scheinen real, doch sind es nicht nur Bilderinnerungen, die in das Bewusstsein drängen? Die Trennung zwischen kollektivem und individuellem Bildgedächtnis will kaum gelingen.

Den Trägerinnen der Amulette ist raffiniert eine Doppelrolle in der Serie „Mona“ auferlegt: Zum einen ergänzen und erläutern sie subtil die Porträts, zum anderen zeugen sie von dem, was wahre „Fans“ tun und, was das eigentlich intendierte Ziel der Bilder und Medien bei der „Kreation“ einer Ikone ist: Die Identitifizierung. Abbild und Mimesis, Fiktion und Identifikation treten in eine perforierende Beziehung und bedingen sich gegenseitig. Anstelle der Einverleibung erfolgt in den Arbeiten von Sabine Dehnel die Auferlegung mit dem Bild als Stellvertreter und Identifikationsstifter. So gesehen hat das fehlende Gesicht der Trägerin eine logische Konsequenz – es ist unbedeutend.  | Constanze Musterer

A Body of Work’ is a series of self portraits taken over seven years. I set out to take strong, powerful, dynamic and interesting nudes and started to use myself as a model, firstly as I was always available, and then because I realised something interesting was happening. I could push myself further than I could other models, and by shooting myself the pictures became a visual autobiography. The pictures are very spontaneous within the space, I just react to what’s there.

The pictures are a secret conversation between myself and the location, a bit of silent theatrics which I document. Because I’m alone, often in quite scary places when I shoot, the atmosphere and my mood is very raw and saturates the pictures.

The process of taking the pictures is punishing. It leaves me bruised and aching. Every picture is taken on self-timer, which makes for a repetitious, highly physical process of running between the camera and the pose, making adjustments as I go. It feels like I’m hammering my body into the landscape of the room, one picture at a time.

On reflection I can see that my state of mind at the time of shooting definitely feeds into the imagery, my choice of pose and the general feeling of the work.  ‘A Body of Work’ as it stands is just the first seven years, I want to keep taking them until I can no longer move to do it – it will be interesting to see my body age and how the poses and locations will change with it.  | Polly Penrose

In meinen ersten Faden-Arbeiten (Selbst, 1975) in Verbindung mit Fotografie übernähe ich mit einem grauen Seiden-faden Selbstportraits und überziehe mein Gesicht mit einer filigranen Verspannung aus Fäden. Als Vorgabe nehme ich den fotografierten Faden, der bei meiner Performance entstanden ist.
Im Werkzyklus: Grima mit Katze, gestalte ich Mutationen als Verschmelzung zwischen Mensch und Tier. Für diese Mischwesen entkerne ich eigene Portraitaufnahmen und setze sie neu zusammen mit Fragmenten von Fotos meiner Kinder und Tiergesichtern. “Grima” ist das altnordische Wort für Maske und hat sich in verschiedenen Wörtern bis heute erhalten z.B. in Grimasse, Grausen oder Grinsen. | Annegret Soltau

Susiraja’s self-portraits do not merely put her in front of the mirror, but they jeer at today’s values that are stuck on shallowness. Susiraja’s pictures mock the economy of pretentiousness: self-promotion and the productization human beings, piggy-backing on outside of things and feigned competence. The gang thinks that life is great as long as aspects such as status and appearance are starched as narrow and shiny as other networkers; even if only for a picture. Because modern reality is just an image. (…)

Susiraja’s pictures touch people and stop them, but not just with their ability to shock. You could say that in Susiraja’s pictures, we look for a person who is becoming extinct for lack of living space, reality swept away under indifferent images. Ecce homo, look at the person! Maybe Susiraja’s pictures can entice people to look at their own reality, to find the strength to be their own unique selves, to ignore the vanity of the market. (…)
The history of exclusion and feigned betterment repeats itself from one society and community to another. There is supposed to be a mold, into which everyone should fit and get stuck. There is still space for one more, ridiculed and excluded, who helps those feigning betterment to recognize their excellence. In den letzten 60 Jahren haben sich insbesondere Künstlerinnen intensiv mit der Transformation des Körpers in vielfältigsten Formen und Medien beschäftigt.  Dabei wird der Körper als lebendes Medium und künstlerisches Material verstanden. Auch aktuell findet ein veränderter Umgang mit der Wahrnehmung des eigenen Körpers statt. Durch Prozesse der Fragmentarisierung und Zerstückelung wird die Verletzlichkeit des Körpers gezeigt. Durch Selbstexperimente und Untersuchung des Verhältnisses von Körper und Raum, Subjekt und Objekt wird sich  der eigenen Körperlichkeit vergewissert sowie Fragen nach Bildmedien, Wahrnehmung und dem Verständnis von Repräsentation gestellt.

Für die vierte Ausgabe des Cuadro Art Magazine hat Herausgeber Mario Hergueta, selbst Künstler, vier Künstlerinnen aus den USA, FInnland, Engl and und Deutschland eingeladen, das quadratische Format des Magazins für ihre künstlerischen Konzepte zu nutzen.
